The Timucuan Indians were the first known inhabitants of the area. After European settlers arrived in the area, what is now Middleburg became known as Clark’s Ferry in the early 1800’s, named for Asa Clark who ran a ferry on Black Creek, a tributary of the St. Johns River. From the site, timber and local crops could be transported via steamboats, canoes, and rafts, over the waterways to Jacksonville and other communities for sale. In the early 1850’s, the community’s name was changed to Middleburg.
