Background Information about St Augustine:
St. Augustine has a rich heritage, which makes the city and its surroundings a unique getaway for visitors. Founded in September 1565 by Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain, St. Augustine (in Spanish: San Agustín) then served as the capital of Spanish Florida for two hundred years. The city is known to be the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the United States, and often called simply the “Nation’s Oldest City”.
Local St. Augustine attractions include:
Castillo de San Marcos Construction began on the Castillo de San Marcos in 1672 and lasted 23 years, making it the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The Castillo de San Marcos is a large, Spanish fort which was built to protect and defend Spain’s claims in the New World. Many Spanish forts preceded the Castillo, however, this one made of coquina was impenetrable to enemy attack and was fire resistant. Now it is a National Monument.
The Castillo has plenty to explore, from the numerous rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners over the years, to the large interior courtyard and expansive gun deck which once offered an excellent position for protecting the Matanzas River waterway, and now offers a great view of the city. Reenactments, cannon firings, and weaponry demonstrations are held at Castillo de San Marcos on a regular basis.
Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a 15 acre waterfront, Historical Site. Florida was founded as “La Florida” for the King of Spain in 1513 by Spanish Explorer Ponce de Leon, during his search for the Legendary Fountain of Youth. The Park offers:
- viewing the stars in a Planetarium
- see a re-constructed Native Timucua Indian Village
- observe a periodic Cannon firing
- tour a two-story high Discovery Globe which depicts early Spanish Exploration
- learn about what it was like when Europeans first came to America
- enjoy a relaxing waterfront park where peacocks strut in the shade of beautiful old live oak trees
St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum The site of an early Spanish watchtower, the current St. Augustine Lighthouse was constructed of Alabama brick and Philadelphia iron in 1876. Lighthouse keepers and their assistants lived and worked at the Lighthouse until the tower was automated in 1955. The Lighthouse is also the home base of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP). Through historical research and scientific study of shipwrecks and other maritime archaeological sites LAMP is dedicated to the investigation, interpretation and better understanding of the maritime history and archaeology of St. Augustine, and the First Coast region of Florida. Also at the Lighthouse, the LAMP Boatworks is the traditional wooden boatbuilding program overseen by the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program and carried out by a dedicated team of volunteers.
